A new variety of daffodil went on sale yesterday, created exclusively for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Available only in Homebase, all proceeds from the £1 bulbs will go to the charity.

Homebase Community Affairs Manager Lorna Liggett said: “The daffodil has been named ‘Choice’ in support of Marie Curie Cancer Care’s ‘Supporting the Choice to Die at Home’ campaign.

“Marie Curie Nurses care for half of the terminally ill patients in the UK who die at home, but the charity wants to give more patients the choice they deserve – to be cared for in the comfortable and familiar surroundings of their own homes, supported by the people who matter to them most.”

For every 30 bulbs sold the charity will be able to provide an extra hour of nursing in a patient’s home.

Marie Curie Cancer Care Nurse of the Year Dawn Dyne said: “Only four in 100 people would choose to die in hospital but this is the reality for half of cancer patients.

“Marie Curie Cancer Care is working to change this but it needs your help. If there’s one thing you do this autumn, show your support and pick up a bulb of ‘Choice’.”

The bulbs are on sale until November 17.
