(L-R) Christine Allardyce, Carol Smillie,
Michelle Carroll and Cherie Raby
The awards were presented in a ceremony at the Marie Curie Hospice, Glasgow. This was a particularly special ceremony, as for the first time in Scotland both winners have the same Nursing Team Manager, Cherie Raby.
Christine Allardyce, from Stirlingshire is this year’s Nurse of the Year for Scotland. Michelle Carroll, from Fife, received the Healthcare Assistant of the Year award.
Christine, 60, celebrated her 25th year with Marie Curie earlier this year, and has shown great commitment to the charity over the years by giving her support to the Great Daffodil Appeal. Michelle, 39, who has only been with Marie Curie for 18 months, has already shown great dedication in her work, and husband recently did a parachute jump to raise money for the charity.
As Nurse of the Year and Healthcare Assistant of the Year they will both promote the work of the charity and act as ambassadors for its 613 nurses and healthcare assistants in Scotland.
Christine Allardyce, Nurse of the Year, commented: “I really am honoured to have been awarded this title. Marie Curie Nurses play a vital role in the care of people with terminal illnesses, and I am delighted that our work has been acknowledged in such a way.”
Michelle Carroll, Healthcare Assistant of the Year, was equally as thrilled with her title: “Our work in the community is essential as it gives families a much-needed break from caring for their loved ones. I am really looking forward to raising the profile of the charity in my new role this coming year.”
Carol Smillie said: “The work done by Marie Curie nurses is second to none, and it’s fantastic that their commitment and enthusiasm have been given such recognition. I’m delighted to have been asked to present the two awards today and wish the winners all the best in their new roles.”
