Tower Hamlets Primary Care Trust is set to become the first trust to pilot a new electronic toolkit and expert adviser service offered by the Marie Curie Delivering Choice Programme.

Programme independently

The toolkit is a step-by-step guide to the programme which will enable the PCT to implement it independently with support from an expert adviser from Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The Delivering Choice Programme in Tower Hamlets was officially launched in Bethnal Green on August 5, 2008 with a half-day event and workshops for partners and stakeholders.

The PCT will be undergoing the initial ‘testing’ phase where they will use and feedback on the toolkit’s effectiveness and usability.

To deliver the programme, Tower Hamlets PCT is working with partners which include the London Ambulance Service, Barts and the London NHS Trust, St Joseph’s Hospice and Age Concern.

Salma Yasmeen, Programme Manager for the programme in Tower Hamlets, said: “We aim to help develop and deliver better end of life care to more patients and their carers than ever before.

"The Delivering Choice Programme seeks to build on the work carried out by existing services in the borough. We will be working collaboratively with local organisations, frontline staff, patients and carers, and with Marie Curie Cancer Care to ensure that we use this opportunity to develop services that meet the diverse needs and priorities of patients and families.”

Jackie Booth, Senior Project Manager at Marie Curie Cancer Care, said: “We are delighted that Tower Hamlets PCT is adopting the Delivering Choice Programme.

"As the first PCT to pilot our programme’s new toolkit and expert adviser services, we look forward to working with the project team to help provide more choices to their patients.

"Through our partnership, we will be sharing what we’ve learned from our other projects as well as learning from the team at Tower Hamlets.”

As the first PCT to introduce the new system, Tower Hamlets will advise the charity on its effectiveness and usability.
