The 2008 Flora London Marathon took place on Sunday and soap stars John Altman and Gary Webster joined the 250 runners taking part for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

John, best know as ‘nasty’ Nick Cotton in BBC1 soap EastEnders and Gary, best known for roles in the Bill and Minder, both completed the course in five hours and 20 minutes.

John said: “I’m just glad I’m all in one piece, Gary and I stuck together all the way.

“I was incredibly pleased to get to the 24 mile point, running along Embankment was a great feeling, it was just that point when the rain really came down but it was quite welcome by then and cooled everybody down for the last couple of miles.”

Gary said: “I felt I had a good run, it was easier than last year but I finished in a longer time probably because it was more controlled this time.

“I’m glad I have had the opportunity to run the marathon twice as I wanted to prove to myself the first one wasn’t a fluke.”

The day was even more poignant for John, who was raising money for the charity after his friend and fellow Twickenham resident Neil Aspinall recently died from cancer.

Neil is known to millions of Beatles fans as a close confidante of the band who ran their Apple Corps company up until 2007.
