Calcraft, Jeanne and Peter Wright
Chris Brown, 62, and fellow farmer Peter Wright, 51, both from Baldersby near Ripon, will set out next April, starting with a 20-mile warm-up run from their homes to York Minster.
In what’s dubbed the York Minster-Westminster run, Ripon Running Club members Chris and Peter will follow bridle paths, towpaths and footpaths that run parallel with the old A1.
Their Herculean effort aims to raise £10,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Chris said: “We’re doing it for Marie Curie because we’ve seen what it does and how it works, and it’s very impressive.
“I’m lucky that I am fit and well and can do this. Most people have friends who have been affected by cancer and many have called on Marie Curie – knowing that what we’re raising money to do is to put nurses on the ground is very important to us.”
Backup for the run, covering a total of 254 miles, will be provided by Peter’s wife Jeannie who will shadow the runners’ route in a camper van. And when they eventually reach London Jeannie will join in running the London Marathon.
Chris, who has scaled Everest and taken part in several marathons including the Coast to Coast and the Marathon De Sables in the Sahara, said: “It’s going to be tough. Staying fit and not over-training will be vital. We just need to focus on each day as it comes – knowing that we’ll have raised a substantial sum for Marie Curie before we set off will keep us going!”
