Sir Bill, who died at the age of 80 in August 2008, was a figure of huge importance in BBC television for many decades and a Life Vice President of Marie Curie Cancer Care. In 2001, he received a knighthood for his services to British broadcasting and Marie Curie Cancer Care.

He was actively involved with the charity for many years and was a devoted supporter of the Volunteer Achievement Awards, warmly presenting recipients with their awards since the first ceremony in 2003.

The Above and Beyond Award in memory of Sir Bill Cotton will be one of the 10 award categories presented to volunteers at a ceremony in central London on December 4.

The award will recognise exceptionally committed individuals in a position of public prominence who have used their status and personal networks to advance and promote the charity's cause at every opportunity.

It will be presented to someone who has taken Marie Curie Cancer Care under their wing, going above and beyond what would normally be expected of them in their support for the charity.

Awards will only be presented in this category where an exceptional commitment has been demonstrated.

The launch of the Marie Curie Volunteer Achievement Awards 2009 coincides with the launch of Volunteers’ Week which takes place on June 1-7.
