The Big Build’s Big Thank You

The Big Build Appeal has now raised £15.5 million thanks to the warm generosity of the people of Glasgow and beyond.

Glasgow Big Build Appeal

Our public fundraising effort over the past three years has edged the Appeal very close to its final target of £16.1 million and we have been overwhelmed by the support which has taken the charity to this point. This milestone could not have been achieved without the dedication of so many who wanted to give what they could to this worthwhile project.

Going forward, the final stage of the Appeal will now focus on raising the remaining £600,000 required through private donations.

Thomas Hughes-Hallett, Chief Executive, Marie Curie Cancer Care said: “This was a huge challenge from the outset, but thanks to the continued, dedicated generosity of the many people who have helped us along the way, we are almost at the finishing line. We can see every day how our fundraising efforts benefit the patients, their families and the staff in our new hospice.

“Glasgow needed a new Marie Curie hospice, one which would serve the needs of generations to come and this is now what we have. None of this would have been possible without the fantastic public support received, and for this we are eternally grateful. We hope many people who have joined in our Big Build Appeal will continue to support us for many years to come.”

The old hospice, which was built more than 30 years ago, was beginning to show its age. As excellent as the nursing standards were, the dated facilities were affecting patients’ comfort, privacy and the standard of care that they received. But since welcoming its first patients at the end of January 2010, it is clear the new building is already having a huge impact on patients, their loved ones, and staff.

The new Marie Curie Hospice, Glasgow as with the other eight across the UK, relies on public donations to deliver its services. Going forward, Marie Curie will be asking the people of Glasgow to continue their support by helping to fund the work in the hospice which costs around £12,200 a day to run, more than £4 million a year.

Every donation allows the Marie Curie Hospice, Glasgow to continue providing outstanding expert care and a better quality of life for patients with cancer and other illnesses, and support for families and carers, all totally free of charge.

The new hospice was built with everyone’s needs in mind and will no doubt be serving the needs of patients and their families well in to the future.
