Louise qualified in medicine with honours and distinction in clinical pharmacology and therapeutics from St Mary's Hospital Medical School in 1980 and initially trained as a histopathologist holding an academic post in experimental pathology at St Mary's working on the immunohistopathology of renal disease.

After a career break for children, Louise re-trained in palliative medicine working part time in the department of palliative medicine at the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust and at Marie Curie Hospice, Edenhall.

Since the mid 1990s Louise has developed the research arm of palliative medicine at the Royal Free. In this expanding field, she has co-ordinated the development of extensive externally funded research across three cancer networks and supervises research fellows and post graduate students.

Louise is honorary lecturer in the Health and Social Science Department of Middlesex University. She sits on the National Cancer Research Institute Psycho-oncology Clinical Studies Development Group and represents Cancer and Blood Disorders on the Royal Free NHS Trust Clinical Audit and Effectiveness Committee.

She is research representative on the North Central London Palliative and Supportive Care Network.

Current research interests: working with Adrian Tookman and Professor Michael King, Head of Mental Health Sciences, her main research interests have been the development and testing of interventions, spirituality, sexuality, carer needs, bereavement, and continuity of care. The research has spanned both oncology and palliative care and extends into non-cancer interests such as palliative care in dementia and other chronic diseases.
