Marie Curie Cancer Care hospices
Marie Curie Cancer Care is the UK’s leading independent hospice provider, offering the best possible care in a safe and supportive environment. We provide specialist support to people with cancer and other illnesses at no cost to individuals or their families.
Day services
Many people choose to visit our hospice day services. Here, they can attend health clinics and social activities, receive practical advice and support, or a full programme of care tailored to their individual needs. All Marie Curie Hospices offer a range of relaxing complementary therapies, such as aromatherapy or massage.
Our specialist nurses, doctors and therapists can help people manage pain, breathlessness or other symptoms – enhancing their feeling of wellbeing. Hospice staff may also visit people in their own homes.
In-patient care
Our expert staff can make people comfortable if they have persistent pain, tiredness, breathlessness or other symptoms. This sometimes means staying as an in-patient. The average length of stay is around two weeks.
Some Marie Curie Hospices offer respite care. This short-term arrangement allows a person to stay at the hospice to give their carer a break.
Palliative care
This term, often used by health professionals, describes the type of care that focuses on a person’s comfort and quality of life if they are ill with a progressive incurable disease. It recognises that families need support too. People can receive palliative care at the same time as other therapies or treatments.
How can I get Marie Curie Hospice care?
If you live near to a Marie Curie Hospice and think you, or someone you know, might benefit from our services ask the GP or hospital doctor to make a referral. Referral is based on a person’s medical, social or emotional needs.

Helping you through a hospital stay
Helping you through a hospital stay: information booklet for older people is a booklet that may be useful for people who are going into a hospital or hospice for a planned stay.
We suggest that you also ask the specific hospital/hospice if they have their own guide. Please note that some of the information in this booklet may not be relevant for hospices, and may not be relevant for all hospitals.
