Elder Kenneth Johnson, an ecclesiastical leader of the Church in Europe, handed the cheque to Lynn Wood, Fundraising Manager on October 20, 2005. The donation will be used to purchase a Syringe Driver. The driver administers drugs to a patient slowly throughout the day, keeping them as comfortable as possible.
Elder Johnson said that he was very happy to be able to make this donation on behalf of the Church's Humanitarian Fund as a part of the ongoing relationship between the Church and the hospice, which are close neighbours. He commented upon the importance of the work of the hospice and paid tribute to the excellent care and treatment that a member of the congregation and her family had received recently during the final weeks of her life.
He also mentioned that as the Church celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of its founding prophet, Joseph Smith, the donations of members to the Humanitarian Fund was one way in which they tried to follow his teaching that, “A true Latter-day Saint is to feed the hungry, to cloth the naked, to provide for the widow, to dry up the tear of the orphan, to comforted the afflicted, whether in this Church or in any other or in no church at all, wherever he finds them”.
