Role of the District Nurse

When someone is ill and living at home, their medical care is the responsibility of their local GP.

  • The District Nurse will carry out an assessment of the patient's needs and decide, in consultation with the patient and family, what support is required.
  • The District Nurse may recommend a Marie Curie Registered Nurse or a Marie Curie Healthcare Assistant depending on the patient's needs.
  • If a Marie Curie home nurse is right for you, the District Nurse will decide the periods of care and what shifts are needed.
  • The District Nurse will review the patient's care at intervals and decide whether to increase or decrease the amount of care requested.
  • The District Nurse will supply any medical equipment needed for the patient's home care.
