“I've volunteered for charities all my life”

During Volunteers’ Week we are celebrating the work of our amazing volunteers. Trustees like Linda play a crucial role in managing the charity, and we appreciate their support so much. by Linda Urquhart Trustee Linda Urquhart, Marie Curie Trustee

I sit on Marie Curie’s Council of Trustees. The trustees are responsible for the strategic management of the charity. I regard my role as that of a 'critical friend', supporting and challenging the Executive Team that runs the charity, making sure they're going in the right direction and that they're making progress on the journey.
The Council meets six times a year but also provides support to the charity in a number of other ways.  As the only trustee based in Scotland, I also chair Marie Curie's Scottish Advisory Board.  This board is made up of a group of individuals from a wide range of backgrounds who help advise the charity on its activities from a Scottish perspective, where health care is devolved and the landscape in which our services are delivered can be quite different. I've volunteered for charities all my life. I've been really fortunate in my family, my education, my career and my health and I think it's important to give something back. The experience I have from my career hopefully means that I can be useful to Marie Curie. I think the work Marie Curie does is hugely important and provides support to people at a difficult time. They supported my late father, not with palliative care, but with advice on living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He really appreciated the time given to him and the interest shown in his condition. It's hugely rewarding to see the care and advice which Marie Curie is able to offer, both to those living with a terminal illness and those around them. Through volunteering I get to meet so many interesting people, whether it's patients, staff, fundraisers or others. I always come away from a Marie Curie meeting feeling uplifted, with a better sense of perspective and more determination to continue supporting this great charity. I'm always particularly impressed and touched by the dedication of those who fundraise for the charity, whether it's Sir Ranulph Fiennes doing the Marathon des Sables or some of the great community fundraisers who come up with such creative ideas to raise money right across the UK.
