The expansion of the Marie Curie Helper service - helping more people

Marie Curie is one of six charities that will benefit from ITV’s Christmas fundraising appeal, Text Santa. The appeal will help fund the expansion of the Marie Curie Helper service, which currently operates in 10 regions across the UK. With the help of Text Santa donations, we will open six brand new services in 2015. The Text Santa show airs tomorrow evening and here is one story which indicates the need for the service to expand.

Beryl and Peter with Marie Curie Nurse, Liz Grieve

To announce this new service, which will commence in 2015, we invited ITV Borders to visit a family who are currently supported by their local nursing service and to meet one of the nurses who provides much needed care to terminally ill people and their families. Watch the story on the ITV website Liz Grieve is a registered nurse who has worked for Marie Curie in Dumfries & Galloway for over ten years. On average Liz works eight night shifts a month where she provides overnight care for people in their own home. This provides their loved ones with some much needed respite from care and a good night’s rest. Liz is also apart the Rapid Support team who act at times of crisis to help deliver emergency care. This was how she met Beryl and husband Peter, when the team responded to a call after midnight one weekend. The couple, who live in Dumfries, have been married for 43 years. Diagnosed with cancer and with problems with her immune system, Beryl needs constant care and every Friday the Marie Curie Nursing service arrive, allowing Peter to get out of the house and recharge his batteries. Five hours later he returns to the sound of laughter and Beryl catches him up on what he’s missed. Speaking about the support her and Peter receive, Beryl says: “Quite simply I have been nursed, but I have been loved better and that is what has been given to me. I've never known such love ever, it's just incredible". The expansion of the Marie Curie Helper service will help more people like Beryl to benefit from regular emotional support from one of our volunteers. It also provides people like Peter with more respite from the difficulties of caring for a loved one. Donate to Text Santa and help with the expansion of our Helper service.
