Welsh government consults on care plans

by Simon Jones Head of Policy and Public Affairs, Wales The NHS in Wales

The Welsh Government has opened a consultation on its plan for delivering end of life care.

Together for Health – delivering end of life care sets out how NHS Wales will improve end of life care up to 2016. Key aims of the plan include providing 24/7 support to all people entering the terminal phase of their illness and ensuring pain and symptoms are controlled. Access to appropriate support and symptom control must be the same wherever a person dies – at home, in hospital, in a care home or a hospice, the plan says. Marie Curie Cancer Care will be responding to the consultation and one of the key themes in this response will be stressing the need for greater emphasis on ensuring people are supported in their choice of where they wish to be cared for and die. The Welsh Government’s plan will require Local Health Boards to prepare delivery plans for their areas and to report in a transparent way against a series of outcome indicators.
