Marie Curie Cymru Senior Policy Manager, Natasha Davies, said: "We welcome the commitment in the Welsh Government's Programme for Government to address the key challenges facing palliative and end of life care.
"Good palliative care can have a profound impact on those living with a terminal illness and those close to them. But almost 1 in 3 adults in Wales are left without the care and support they need at the end of life. Our palliative and end of life care system is under immense pressure, and with demand for care growing, action is urgently needed.
"The Programme for Government marks a vital first step in recognising the importance of palliative care. But this headline commitment must be accompanied by action that drives meaningful change which is felt by those living with a terminal illness.
"The commitments set out in the Plaid Cymru manifesto to require Health Boards to assess local need and publish palliative care delivery plans, to include palliative care leads on Regional Partnership Boards, to improve support for end of life carers, and place hospices on a sustainable financial footing, must now be delivered.
"Action is also needed to ensure that people living with a terminal illness can be cared for at home or in the community. This should include 24/7 access to advice and support from palliative care professionals via 111, the roll out of palliative care paramedics in all parts of Wales - and the placement of a palliative care nurse in every community.
"How we care for people at the end of life is a measure of the kind of society we want to be. It's a conversation that deserves far greater attention this Senedd term. Marie Curie will continue to campaign for change and stands ready to work with Government and health leaders to deliver the palliative care system that Wales deserves."

“Mae rhaid i’r ymrwymiadau wedi’i gosod mewn maniffesto Plaid Cymru i ofyn Byrddau Iechyd I asesu anghenion lleol a datgani cynllunion ddanfon gofal lliniarol, i gynnwys arweinwyr gofal lliniarol ar Fyrddau Partneriaeth Ranbarthol, I wella cefnogaeth am ofalwyr diwedd oes, a rhoi hosbisau ar sefyllfa ariannol gynaliadwy, nawr cael ei ddarparu.
“Mae angen gweithred hefyd i sicrhau fod pobl sy’n byw efo salwch terfynol yn gallu cael gofal adref neu yn y gymuned. Dyle hwn cynnwys mynediad 24/7 i gyngor a chefnogaeth oddi wrth weithwyr proffesiynol trwy 111, parafeddygon gofal lliniarol ym mhob rhan o Gymru – a’r lleoli o nyrsys gofal lliniarol ym mhob cymuned.
“Mae sut i ni’n gofalu am bobl ar ddiwedd oes yn mesur o’r fath o Gymdeithas rydym eisiau fod. Mae’n sgwrs sydd yn haeddu llawer mwy sylw'r term Senedd yma. Fydd Marie Curie yn parhau i ymgyrchu am newid ac yn sefyll yn barod i weithio efo’r Llywodraeth ac arweinydd iechyd i ddarparu’r system gofal lliniarol mae Cymru’n haeddu.”
