Journal club session with people sitting around a meeting table
A structured, easy-to-use framework for running research-focused journal clubs across teams and sites.
The palliative care journal club toolkit aims to overcome the challenges that have existed in implementing and maintaining multi-disciplinary journal clubs in palliative care. It provides a tried and tested approach to setting up and running a journal club.
The toolkit provides a collection of resources and practical help to support staff to develop and implement a journal club in their hospice.

About journal clubs

How the palliative care journal club was developed

In 2018, we implemented a multi-professional journal club in Marie Curie Hospice Liverpool (MHCL) to discuss research and its relevancy for local practice.
In 2022, the palliative care journal club toolkit was developed by:
  • Dr Amara Nwosu – Marie Curie Research Liverpool Research Lead; Senior Clinical Lecturer in Palliative Care, Lancaster University; Honorary Consultant in Palliative Care, Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • Sarah Stanley – Research Nurse, Marie Curie Hospice Liverpool; PhD researcher, Liverpool John Moores University
  • Dr Tom Steele – Consultant in Palliative Care, Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
We tested feasibility and outcomes of using the toolkit in St Mary’s Hospice, Ulverston, Cumbria. This evaluation was funded by Marie Curie (Impact grant) and sponsored by Lancaster University.
Over 6 months we worked with senior management at St Mary’s Hospice to support their staff to independently implement the journal club, using the toolkit’s stepwise process. The journal club was successfully integrated at the hospice and has resulted in several positive educational, research and quality improvement outcomes for staff and service users.
