Coming soon: research call on ‘Care close to home, in and out of hours’ for people with palliative and end of life care needs.
Marie Curie’s next call to its Research Grants Scheme will focus on some of the research priorities identified by people with lived and professional experience in the refreshed palliative and end of life care Priority Setting Partnership with the James Lind Alliance. The call will focus on generating research evidence on care close to home, in and out of hours, for people with palliative and end of life care needs, aligning closely with the priority: ‘What are the best ways to provide palliative and end of life care in the community, for example what are the roles of different services and professions?’ (priority 21). It will be formally launched on 2nd June 2026.
The above JLA question also links to four other JLA priorities which are captured in the call: dealing with skills staff need to enable people to die well at home (priority 3), best ways to provide palliative and end of life care out of hours (priority 9), improving communication and care coordination (priority 6) and better meeting the complex needs of people with multiple health conditions (priority 5).
The research call links closely with Marie Curie’s strategy and mission to close the gap in end of life care by addressing one or more of four broad areas of evidence need:
- This includes research to understand the current provision in primary and community care, alongside patient experience.
- It supports the development, evaluation, and implementation of models of service delivery or targeted interventions.
- The call aims to generate evidence that helps reduce inequality in the provision of out-of-hours care.
- In addition, it encourages research that conducts economic evaluations, such as cost–benefit analyses, to assess service delivery models and their comparative benefits.
The full scope of the call and details of how to apply will be made available via this website and to the Marie Curie newsletter when the call launches on 2 June 2026.
