You’re making a difference in your local community.
All across the UK, Marie Curie fundraising groups organise and support fundraising activities in their local community to help raise vital funds for people at the end of life.
On this page, we explain how you can get involved throughout the year and offer guidance around running your group.

How can you help us?

From taking part in collections during the Great Daffodil Appeal to organising your own fundraising activities, there are tons of ways your fundraising group can support Marie Curie throughout the year. Every penny you raise will help more people at the end of life get the expert care they need.

I have made some very good friends from my Fundraising Group. Volunteering with Marie Curie is like belonging to a family.

How to run your fundraising group

Roles within your fundraising group

Fundraising group members may choose to take on set tasks to help with the smooth running of the group. These may include Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and Social Media Volunteer. Tasks in a group make it clear to everyone who is doing what and will make it easier for you to get things done.

Your meetings

With your group, be sure to agree on a convenient time and meeting place for your group (or whether you’d prefer to meet virtually).
You may find it useful to have a meeting agenda for this, which you can circulate to members beforehand. An agreed group member should make notes of agreed decisions and actions. They should then share actions with absent group members as well as your Volunteer Manager. You can use our example meeting minutes document as a guide.
The Treasurer or an agreed group member can update the group on any income raised since the last meeting. The meeting is a good opportunity to circulate any new Marie Curie information or updates and hand out leaflets for upcoming events in the community.

AGM/Annual Celebration meeting

The group should hold a special meeting once a year to celebrate your achievements. We suggest this date is fixed well in advance as your Volunteer Manager may try to attend this meeting.
The meeting should:
  • Celebrate milestones and achievements from the past year.
  • Report on the monies raised and banked.
  • Review and rotate tasks within the group (if necessary).
  • Plan for the forthcoming year. You can use the tools and resources on our **Raising Money ** page to help.

Download our AGM agenda for your meeting.

Tips for recruiting new members to your fundraising group

  • Think about encouraging new group members to join at the end of your press releases.
  • Speak to your Volunteer Manager if you’re interested in templates for social media assets, posters and leaflets to help recruit new members.
  • Linking your fundraising group's Facebook page with Marie Curie’s official Facebook pages will help you contact supporters in your area.
  • Ask your Volunteer Manager for an “Ask me about volunteering” badge to wear to an upcoming collection.
  • Talk to supporters who attend your collections and events, inviting them to come along to learn more. Remember, all new members need to go through the recruitment process.
If you have any concerns about talking to potential new members, ask your Volunteer Manager who will help by meeting them with you.

Diversity policy

Marie Curie recognises that it is through the diversity of our workforce that we are able to provide the best care for our patients. We aim to demonstrate respect for all our employees and volunteers, valuing each individual’s contribution, regardless of their gender, age, sexual orientation, marital status, gender re-assignment, disability, nationality, race, ethnic origin, religion or belief. The aim of the policy is to eliminate discriminatory practices and to comply with discrimination legislation.
Marie Curie expects that any person interested in supporting or joining your Fundraising Group will be selected solely on the basis of their skills, knowledge or experience. If you have any concerns or questions about the policy, please ask your Volunteer Manager.

Young person policy

All fundraising group members must be over 18 years of age.
If you or a fundraising group member has a relation who is aged 14 years and over who would like to support the fundraising group, please speak to your volunteer manager who will be able to let you know if there are any options for them to support.
