Day services

We welcome adults of all ages to our modern, fully equipped hospice day service department.

With group activities and individual appointments we can help you choose the best options to suit your health needs, lifestyle and circumstances. Services are always free for patients and families.

If you're eligible for our hospice day services, you'll need the permission of your GP to get a referral. Speak to your GP or District Nurse and ask them to refer you. Read more about referrals to our services.

When and where our services are available

To help you stay in your own home and be cared for locally, we offer our day services in different venues each day of the week.

Each week, our hospice day services are available from 9.30am – 4.30pm at the following locations:

Monday: Ards Community Hospital, Newtownards

Tuesday: The Resurgam Trust, Laganview Enterprise Centre, Lisburn

Wednesday: Marie Curie Hospice, Belfast

Thursday: Downe Hospital, Downpatrick

Friday: Marie Curie Hospice, Belfast (breathing space clinic only)

What services are available?

Our specialists can help with different aspects of your illness and will recommend a personal programme of care.

Your care will focus not only on the physical symptoms of your illness, but also on helping you to regain control and improve your overall quality of life.

Services include:

  • access to information and advice on any aspect of your illness
  • help to cope with the emotional and psychological impact of your illness
  • relaxation techniques and complementary therapies
  • a specialist programme for people with breathing difficulties
  • help with mobility, including gentle exercise and Wii Fit
  • access to a fully equipped gym
  • advice about nutrition and coping with tiredness, stress or anxiety
  • lymphoedema support.

We also offer advice and support for families and carers.

Breathing Space Lung Clinic

Time: Fridays, 10.30am – 4pm
Location: Marie Curie Hospice, Belfast

This clinic will help you to cope with the physical and emotional impact of living with lung cancer or other lung-related illnesses.

A nurse consultant will look at your problems with you and suggest specific therapies to help you manage breathlessness or other uncomfortable symptoms.

You will also learn techniques to help you relax and deal with the emotional impact of your illness.

You can meet others in a similar situation and your carer, a family member, or friend can come too.

The wellbeing clinic

A physiotherapy-led service offering rehabilitation programmes to help you maintain or improve your ability to be active and mobile.

Intravenous infusions

Intravenous infusions can be arranged for patients who currently attend the service (following discussion with the Medical Doctor) and based on an individual care plan.

Blood transfusions - Belfast Hospice only

As part of an individual care plan following discussion with the Medical Doctor.

All transfusion appointment times will be arranged individually.

Other facilities and complementary therapies

During your visit, you can also take advantage of our other facilities and services including our gym, wet room and our complementary therapies.

Our wide range of safe and natural complementary therapies do not replace traditional care, but people often comment on their relaxing qualities and overall benefits.

Therapies include aromatherapy, Indian head massage, massage, reflexology, relaxation.

Complementary therapy sessions take place Monday to Friday at all day service locations between 10am and 3pm, and are available to both patients and carers.

One-to-one support

If you’re not comfortable attending our sessions in a group setting, you can always make individual appointments with the relevant professionals in our team to get the support you need.
