In the latest episode of On the Marie Curie Couch, bereavement expert Jason Davidson meets actress Jane Horrocks.
Actress, singer and comedian Jane Horrocks has been lighting up British stages and screens for more than 30 years. She charmed the nation as Bubble in Absolutely Fabulous and has starred in films including Life Is Sweet, Little Voice and Sunshine on Leith.
This episode of On The Marie Curie Couch was recorded before the onset of coronavirus in the UK. In it, Jane discusses sending a letter of appreciation to her mum and what makes ‘a life of quality’.
Living a good life
“I feel that if you've led a life of quality, it doesn't matter how long it is, as long as it has been a quality life,” says Jane. “That's what I think about my mum and dad, I think the majority of their life was quality.”
A message to Mum
“Before the Alzheimer's really kicked in, I sent her a letter of appreciation and just listed all the things that I was really appreciative of, and I know that meant a massive amount to her, and she wrote one back to me.
I've still got those letters. I think that to be able to do those things for your parents before they do deteriorate, on a personal level that really meant a lot for me, to be able to do that and that be acknowledged."
