In the latest episode of On the Marie Curie Couch, Milo McCabe sits down with Jason Davidson.
Milo is a comedian, actor and presenter. He is best known to millions across social media for his character Troy Hawke, the well-dressed sole member of the ‘Greeters Guild’, where he interacts with and greets high street shoppers and members of the public. A stand up comic with over 10 years’ experience, Milo has appeared on many TV shows including the BBC’s Live at the Apollo.
In this conversation, Milo talks about the death of his mum, Pat, how he experienced denial, what helped him through grief and guilt around feeling "relief".
“I went into denial”
I’m such a control freak that I’ll almost try and distance myself from things like that, almost on a conscious level. How I learned it is that when you’re in denial or anger you’re in the driving seat. There’s this illusion of control. My coping mechanism at the time – which isn’t a great one – is I went into denial, completely. I stayed in denial for a good long patch of that time. I think I moved from denial to anger, back to denial, then back to anger.
Being open with others
Nine times out of ten, looking people in the eye and telling them what was going on, not only did they not run away but I gave them the space to give something to me that was worrying them or upsetting them or grieving them.
