Corrie and Emmerdale Take on Tour de France
Press release published
Join In Teams with Tour de ITV for Celebrity Cycle RideITV and sports charity Join In announce this week they are partnering for Tour de ITV. The celebrity pub to pub cycle fun ride, which takes place on 1st July, will see members of the Emmerdale cast ride the 60 miles from the Rover’s Return to back to Emmerdale’s local Woolpack pub. They’ll be accompanied by some well-known faces including Laura Tobin – Good Morning Britain’s weather presenter. Tour de ITV will be part of the nationwide ITV Local Heroes campaign, an initiative launched earlier this month that encourages volunteering in local sport. The campaign, which runs alongside ITV’s coverage of the World Cup and the Tour de France aims to inspire, engage and empower viewers to make a difference and help out at their local sports clubs. No-one rides in a Grand Tour or plays in a World Cup without starting out in a grass root club run by volunteers. These clubs are the heart beat of communities across the UK and Join In and ITV want to help them thrive. Taking place only days before the start of ITV’s coverage of the Tour de France, Coronation Street will wave off some of Emmerdale’s well known faces and friends, as they go that extra mile to highlight the important role played by volunteers through a 60mile ride. The challenge will take them along part of the iconic Tour de France route and across the arduous Pennine hills. The celebrities will also ride through local towns and villages, giving local communities the opportunity to line the streets and cheer on their favourite soap stars. As part of the partnership London 2012 legacy charity Join In, will be recruiting ride volunteers and engaging with local schools and sports clubs, encouraging them to cheer on the riders at dedicated stop points in order to showcase the hard work, commitment and time that it takes it to put on a ride and the vital role volunteers play in community sport. The riders will also be raising funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care, the official charity of The Grand Depart. "It's great to part of the ITV Local Heroes campaign inspiring more people to volunteer at local sports clubs allowing others to enjoy more sport. I think the ride will be a lot of fun, and a great way to raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care" " I'm excited to be doing something at the heart of our local community inspiring people to volunteer at sports clubs which allows others to enjoy more sports and lead a healthy life. It's also great that we raising funds for a great charity like Marie Curie Cancer Care" “The Tour de ITV is a great way that we can go that extra mile during a fantastic Summer of Sport and a perfect opportunity to showcase the essential role of the volunteer behind any big or small sporting event. We hope that it will inspire more people to become ITV local heroes and lend a hand at a sporting club or event near them” Sara Hanson - Head of Corporate Responsibility, ITV For more information visit www.itv.com/localheroes For further information about Join In contact jenny.scott@joininuk.org or on 07970 952 656. |

About ITV Corporate Responsibility
Being at the heart of local communities by using our reach, and our programming presence, to highlight causes, and to help inspire, engage and empower viewers to make a difference, is an important part of ITV’s Corporate Responsibility Agenda.
We do this on a national scale, through campaigns such as Text Santa – which has to date raised over 15 million for charitable causes. In addition to fundraising for the chosen charities, Text Santa is all about ‘helping someone near you’, not just through donations, but also by connecting our audiences with our chosen charities on a national and local level. One example of this is ‘The Big Volunteer’ which is part of Text Santa.
On a local level, we use our reach as the UK’s most watched commercial broadcaster, to highlight causes and engage and inspire our viewers to make a difference in local communities. In 2013, over 18 hours of airtime across our programmes was dedicated to highlighting these causes across our communities.

The People’s Millions for example is one of ITV’s long standing campaigns, run in partnership with the Big Lottery Fund. Each year, individual awards of up to £50,000 of National Lottery funding are available for local community projects that will help improve the lives of people from that area. Shortlisted projects are all of our individual regional news areas across the UK, where viewers have the chance to vote for the community project they want to see win up to £50,000 of Big Lottery funding.
About Join In
Join In is the sports volunteering charity created out of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to increase local sports volunteering opportunities and help grow community sport. Its patron is comedian and marathon runner Eddie Izzard. Join In has recently recruited over 200 Local Leaders, a nationwide network of volunteers who will work with sports clubs and physical activity groups to help them recruit and retain volunteers. This will help Join In achieve its aim of putting 100,000 more volunteers into community sport.
Join In is funded by the Big Lottery Fund, government grant and by Official Partner BT. BT is one of the world’s leading providers of communications services and solutions, serving customers in more than 170 countries. BT was the official communications services partner for London 2012, and is committed to ensuring that the social legacy of the Games continues. Last year, BT people spent 43,600 work days volunteering in the community, providing over £13 million of in-kind support and assistance to the organisations they helped.
As part of the Big Lottery Fund’s ‘Keeping the Spirit of 2012 Alive’ programme, The Big Lottery Fund awarded Join In £1.5 million in 2013 to deliver the Join In Summer and Go Local event, ensuring London 2012 volunteers and potential new volunteers continued their volunteering journey at local clubs and community projects. Funding has also supported the launch of Join In's Local Leaders programme, which in 2014 will see Local Leaders recruited and trained to act as Join In's ambassadors working at the heart of communities to put more volunteers into community sport.
Join In is the winner of the Community Programme of the Year, 2014 BT Sport Industry Awards.
