Dr Jane Collins, Chief Executive, Marie Curie comments on With the End in Mind, a new book by palliative care doctor, Kathryn Mannix:
"It is often said that, as a society, we shy away from talking about death and dying – but a reluctance to discuss such an important topic can mean that final wishes of a loved one are not understood or fulfilled. For professionals who want to do their best, it can mean that they are unclear about the type of care their patients want towards the end of life, and bereaved families are left wondering - in the months and years ahead - whether their loved one wanted something different, or if they should have done more.
"With The End in Mind is powerful and uplifting. It’s full of wonderfully poignant and inspirational stories which collectively help to de-mystify and challenge many of the misconceptions that exist about the dying process. At Marie Curie, we know the importance of having the opportunity to talk about the practical and emotional concerns facing those affected by terminal illness. Kathryn’s own experience as a palliative care doctor provides valuable insights on how we can all be better prepared at the end of life. Her compassion shines through, as does her regard for the different colleagues she has worked with over the years to help her provide the best care possible.
"While death comes to us all, the stories explored in this book show that, with the right care and compassionate support, dying doesn’t have to be frightening or painful. It’s a beautiful read and one worth talking about with loved ones."
