Football League launches Marie Curie football week

Press release published

All 72 Football League clubs are preparing to join forces in a united week of action to raise awareness and funds for Marie Curie – The Football League’s Official Charity Partner for the 2010/11 season.

From 7 March to 14 March the whole of The Football League will show its support for the charity. Every League club manager will wear a Marie Curie daffodil pin for their dedicated Marie Curie Football Week home game and media interviews. Clubs will also hold matchday collections for the charity and engage in a host of other fundraising activities.

Marie Curie Football Week is key in generating the funds the charity needs to deliver more free nursing care in every Football League community throughout England and Wales.

Greg Clarke, Chairman of The Football League, said: “This week of action is one of the major focuses of our partnership with Marie Curie this season and we look forward to collectively raising a large amount of money for this fantastic charity.

“The national reach of Marie Curie Football Week is going to give fans, players and managers at all clubs the chance to support the crucial work carried out by Marie Curie Nurses in local communities.”

Catherine LeRoy, Marie Curie Nurse, said: “We’ve seen Football League fans and clubs across England and Wales really get behind the charity this season.

“The generosity of everyone involved will last long after the final whistle has gone. I want to thank everyone who has played a part in ensuring that nurses like me can continue to provide free care to people at home in each of the 72 Football League communities.”

Notes to editor

Marie Curie was selected in September 2009 by The Football League Board to be the official charity partner for the 2010/11 campaign. The decision was made following a vote by over 25,000 fans on the official Football League website which saw Help for Heroes and Marie Curie Cancer Care selected as the two preferred charities from a shortlisted five.
