‘I feel valued as a Marie Curie volunteer’

A eLearning specialist, who provides her expertise to help Marie Curie provide care and support to people living with a terminal illness, has spoken of how she feels valued as a volunteer.

Dr Kathy Seddon, of the Wales Cancer Research Centre, joined the Marie Curie Expert Voices Group in April 2013.

“I initially approached the Marie Curie Pontypool office, by sending a CV and asking how I could help as a volunteer.

“They rang me about a new initiative by Marie Curie, the Expert Voices Group, and asked if I would be interested in joining. I was delighted to say yes.”

The Expert Voices Group offers support to all teams within Marie Curie, by giving feedback on the charity’s initiatives from a carer viewpoint.  This can take place in face to face meetings, or online.

It’s one of a variety of roles on offer with the charity, which range from shop volunteering to office work, or being part of a fundraising group.

“I have been delighted to offer help as a member of the EVG.  As well as hearing from Marie Curie staff, the group shares their expertise among each other, so it is a real learning experience.  It’s always interesting and I hope useful to Marie Curie.

“There are so many reasons I am proud to volunteer for Marie Curie.  The organisation helps so many people and it listens and uses feedback, so our input always feels valued.

“Volunteers need to feel useful and as an EVG member, I always do.”
