Marie Curie extends end of life care research programme

Marie Curie has extended the Marie Curie Research Programme for another three years with an additional £3million of funding to improve end of life care for those with cancer or other advanced progressive life threatening conditions.

The current research programme, which launched in 2010, has awarded 13 research grants to date with an investment of £3 million in funding. Cancer Research UK has agreed to continue to administer the programme application process and grant funding for a further three years.

Dr Teresa Tate, Medical Advisor for Marie Curie, said: “We are delighted to announce that we will be extending the current research programme and again investing up to £1million a year over the next three years.

“The programme has funded several projects that will address some of the challenges we face in the delivery of best evidence-based end of life care. This extension of our investment in the research programme means we can continue to help tackle the funding and knowledge gap in palliative care research and provide the evidence from research that will maximise benefits for patients, families and carers. ”

Dr Fiona Reddington, Head of Population Research Funding at Cancer Research UK: “We are delighted to be continuing our partnership with Marie Curie Cancer Care and look forward to working with them as they fund new work in this important area of research.”
