Marie Curie responds to Sunday Telegraph enquiry into street fundraising

Comment published

In response to the Sunday Telegraph's article about our street fundraising pilot project, Director of Fundraising Fabian French has made the following statement:

“We welcome this investigation by the Sunday Telegraph. We take this extremely seriously. We are disappointed by these allegations and have launched an immediate investigation.

“This was the first time the charity has worked with Tag. They were running a pilot project to test a new way of fundraising for Marie Curie, which has now come to an end.

“Marie Curie is a long-standing member of the Fundraising Standards Board and fully supports its fundraising promise, as well as the codes of fundraising practice published by the Institute of Fundraising. We are also a member of Public Fundraising Regulatory Association, which has its own code of fundraising.

"Street fundraising remains a vital source of income for many major charities. For every £1 spent by the charity on this channel of fundraising, we expect to raise at least £2.50 in return over a five year period. This ensures the work of our nurses looking after terminally ill people at the end of life can continue. However, it must be done in the right way."
