Commenting on Windrush Day 2020, 72 years since the Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks on June 22 1948, Julie Pearce, Chief Nurse, Executive Director of Quality and Caring Services at Marie Curie, said:
“Today gives us an opportunity to acknowledge the immense contribution of the Windrush generation in helping to shape our health and social care system, and to lend our support and thanks to the international nurses and essential key workers who have helped tackle the coronavirus.
“We support the call to grant indefinite leave to the whole of the Windrush generation. The UK owes them a huge debt of gratitude.
"At the same time, we must also acknowledge the reality that the contribution of our black, Asian and ethnic minority colleagues has not always been recognised, respected or rewarded. We all need to better here. We want every part of Marie Curie to be a place where everyone feels accepted, respected, valued, and heard - whether they’re staff, volunteers, supporters or the people we help.”
