Marie Curie Responds to Fuel Crisis
Comment published
Without access to fuel, we are concerned that dying people may not get the essential care and support they need at a critical time of their lives.
Marie Curie Community teams as well as other voluntary sector and other non-NHS care workers must be prioritised and included as key workers in the fuel crisis to avoid a devastating impact on dying people and their loved ones.
At the same time, Marie Curie estimates that over 120 more people a day are dying at home, since the pandemic began. With increasing demand on community services, the current fuel crisis could mean even more people missing out on the vital care and support they need.
Let's not repeat recent mistakes when the palliative and end of life staff missed out on PPE, vaccines and testing because they weren't treated as "frontline NHS".
