Marie Curie response to Scottish hospice funding commitment

The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport Jeane Freeman MSP announced today the Scottish Government’s commitment to provide funding to support hospices across Scotland.

In response, Richard Meade, Marie Curie Head of Policy and Public Affairs comments:

“Marie Curie welcomes the announcement by Jeane Freeman MSP in the Scottish Parliament today that the Scottish Government is committed to providing funding to support hospices across Scotland. We are on the frontline providing nursing care and support for dying people with and without coronavirus, in people’s homes and in our hospices. We look forward to sitting down with the Government in the coming days to work out the appropriate support for the sector.

“The funding will help give us breathing room to ease our financial pressures and help safeguard our essential hospice and community nursing services, as they support dying people, and the NHS through this devastating national crisis.

“We need a quarter of a million pounds a week to run our Scottish services. These are very challenging times for us as unlike many healthcare providers we are heavily reliant on charitable donations to run our frontline services, and the coronavirus crisis has decimated our income.”
