Marie Curie response to Hospice UK survey - "Only three in five Britons know that hospice care is free new survey shows"

Jackie Laidlaw, Manager of the Marie Curie Hospice Hampstead, comments on today’s Hospice UK survey which highlights public perception of hospice care:

“Twenty per cent of people surveyed think hospice care is only for people in their last days of life, however our hospices offer far more than that.  Hospices are welcoming places providing a vital service to the community and it is really important to raise awareness of the role they play in supporting not only patients but also their families. Our hospices care for people with any terminal illness and at any stage of their illness, not just in their final days.

“We offer a variety of services that many people often aren’t even aware of such as complementary therapies like acupuncture, massage and reflexology. We offer bereavement services for families who have lost a loved one and many of our hospices have gyms which are available for those using the hospice as day patients to rebuild strength following treatment and allows patients to take their minds off the day-to-day. Our hospices ensure that everyone gets the compassionate care and support they need and deserve.”
