Marie Curie response to NIHR report on research recruitment
Comment published
In response to the NIHR report on numbers of people taking part in clinical research, Marie Curie Head of Research, Sabine Best, said:
“We are very pleased to see that more people than ever before are taking part in research.
“Clinical research is also hugely important to people at the end of life. Given the limited evidence-base, it is vital research in this important area is carried out to ensure the best care and support is delivered to those affected by terminal illness."
In 2017/18* over 4,200 patients, carers, staff and members of the public were recruited to palliative and end of life care research studies funded by Marie Curie, or carried out by Marie Curie-funded researchers. This included more than 600 people from Marie Curie Hospices who took part in research in 2017/18 - our highest ever recruitment figures for research in hospices.
“We are delighted that the NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN) is committed to supporting health and social care research in hospices and non-NHS settings to help more people benefit from the improvements research can bring.”
