Marie Curie response to the Welsh Government’s End of Life Care Annual Report
Comment published
Following the publication of the Welsh Government’s End of Life Care Annual Report today, Simon Jones, Head of Policy and Public Affairs for Marie Curie Wales, said: “Marie Curie welcomes this important assessment of palliative and end of life care services. We are pleased that the report recognises the substantial improvements specialist palliative care and hospice services can make to quality of life for people who are approaching the end of life. “The Welsh Government’s End of Life Care Delivery Plan recognised the need for continual improvement and this report will help in achieving this. “The report identifies clear priorities* that must be addressed at a national level over the next 12 months. Whilst we welcome this, we believe that improved data collection is also needed, and is an important step to achieving these priorities. “Marie Curie will continue to campaign for greater evidence-based data so that the needs of terminally ill people, their families and carers across Wales can be better understood. We look forward to working with the Welsh Government and the NHS in Wales to make this a reality.” Read the full report here. ENDS |

Notes to editor
* This annual report has highlighted some important priorities that must be addressed at a national level over the next 12 months. These include:
- Encouraging more people to make a will and share their final wishes with family and friends.
- Supporting GPs to ensure that patients are being identified earlier as being in their last year of life, and can therefore receive support from primary care teams.
- Ensuring that systems are in place that supports more people to be cared for and to die in the place of their choice.
- Ongoing implementation of the Welsh integrated care priorities guidance.
- Further development of iWantGreatCare in Wales.
In next year’s annual report we will look at how we have made progress on these and other issues in the intervening year.
