Marie Curie welcomes Government commitment to palliative care but calls for additional funding

Following the Government’s response to the Health Select Committee report on end of life care, Dr Jane Collins, Chief Executive of Marie Curie said:

“We welcome the Government’s commitment to improving access to high quality palliative care in England, particularly the commitment to ensuring that services are available on a seven days a week basis. However, each year 92,000 people in England who need palliative care miss out and only 21% of hospital trusts are currently providing 9-5, seven days a week, face to face services.

“In order to ensure that everyone who needs palliative and end of life care receives it, the Government will need to look carefully at the funding allocated to palliative and end of life care services. Without additional funding, people will continue to die without the appropriate care and we can expect more serious care failings like those highlighted in the Parliamentary & Health Service Ombudsman’s report Dying without Dignity.

“The issue of adequate funding for palliative and end of life care needs to be addressed in the Comprehensive Spending Review and the Government’s forthcoming response to the Choice Review.”
