Marie Curie has welcomed the announcement from the Department of Health that Baroness Neuberger is to chair the independent review of the Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP).

In November last year following extensive media coverage which reported negative experiences of people in hospital, the charity called on the Government to support an early audit of the Liverpool Care Pathway for the Dying Patient to identify where these failings are taking place.

Imelda Redmond CBE, Director of Policy and Public Affairs at Marie Curie said:

"We are pleased that the chair of the independent review has been announced. The Liverpool Care Pathway has enabled thousands of people to experience dignified care in the last hours and days of life. It was developed to spread the hospice model of end of life care into hospitals and other healthcare settings. We know from the stories in the media, that not everyone is getting the high quality end of life care they need and many are being badly let down.

"Marie Curie provides end of life care to people in their place of choice. Last year we cared for more than 35,000 terminally ill patients through our Nursing Service and in our nine hospices. Our services are designed to ensure that the best possible care and patient choice is at the heart of commissioning end of life care across the UK. We look forward to working closely with Baroness Neuberger and the review panel."
