Marie Curie’s Louise Thomas gearing up for Mull Rally

Press release published

Marie Curie Senior Healthcare Assistant Louise Thomas who lives on Mull is gearing up for the 45th Tunnock’s Mull Rally on 10-12 October 2014.

Louise and co-driver Melanie Whittaker will be racing the ‘Marie Curie Mini’ a Mini Cooper branded with the charity’s daffodil emblem that has become a regular sight on the islands.

The Marie Curie Nursing Service is the official charity of the rally and Louise is hoping that as well as raising money, the event will raise vital awareness locally for the charity which supports terminally ill people. It’s hoped this will encourage more people to talk to their District Nurse about how they can benefit from the free nursing service.

Louise Thomas said: “I was inspired to join Marie Curie after I lost my Mum to Breast Cancer almost seven years ago. She was cared for by specialist nurses who made an amazing difference to us all when caring for her. So three years ago when a job was advertised to join the Marie Curie Nursing Service on Mull and Iona, both my mum and myself had worked as nurses/carers for many years, so I applied for the position and was lucky enough to get the job. I wanted to make a difference, like the difference that had been made to me and my family.

“My parent’s love of the Mull Rally was passed on to me from an early age and I hope that I do them proud this year with a race to remember.”

Louise is being supported by the Marie Curie Mull and Iona Fundraising Group who raise money to support the Marie Curie Nursing Service locally.

Louise explains: “Our core service is one-to-one overnight nursing from a Registered Nurse or Senior Healthcare Assistant in a patient’s home, usually for eight or nine hours. Through this support we enable families to spend their last days at home, surrounded by loved ones while receiving the best possible individual care.”

For the Mull Rally Louise’s Marie Curie Mini has been completely transformed by sponsors www.minisport.com and www.motordrive.com. The Mini has appeared on TV screens as part of the BBC Scotland series Grand Tours of the Scottish Islands with Paul Murton and will be appearing later in the year on The Classic Car Show with Paddy Hopkirk and Jodie Kidd.
