Marie Curie response to the Care Quality Commission discussion paper, A second class ending - Exploring the barriers and championing outstanding end of life care for people who are homeless
Dr Caroline Shulman, honorary senior lecturer for the Marie Curie Palliative Care Research Department at University College London (UCL), commented:
“Enormous pressure is currently being placed on hostels who struggle to support people with very poor health, due to a lack of alternatives. Options for place of care and multidisciplinary working are key to improving quality of life for people experiencing homelessness towards the end of their lives. Health and social care providers, including palliative care specialists need to work together with frontline homelessness staff to meet the significant needs of this group.
We’re delighted to see the examples of good practice and joint working highlighted in this report, and there are many lessons to be learned from them.”
