Sisters join forces in aid of hospice which cared for mum and dad
Press release published
Three sisters have joined forces to raise thousands for a Penarth hospice, after both their parents received care there.
Rachel Powell and her sisters Sally Keenan and Lisa Thomas, organised three fundraising dinner dances for the Marie Curie, Cardiff and the Vale Hospice, raising more than £6000.
The three support the charity as both their father, Lyndon “Terry” Radford and their mother Helen Radford, of Whitchurch, Cardiff, died at the Cardiff and Vale Hospice in 2008 and 2014.
Marie Curie hospices provide round-the-clock expert care and support to those living with terminal illness and their families.
“We held the first dinner and dance at Spiro's, St Peter’s Hall in Roath and the other two at the Cardiff Masonic Hall,” said Rachel.
"We had been to a similar event not long after dad passed away and thought we would be able to organise something similar to help raise money."
“We also took part in the Walk Ten for Marie Curie in Margam Park with 20 of our family and friends."
“Both our mum and dad were cared for at the hospice, dad in 2008 and mum in 2014. We found out they both had cancer when they were in hospital and dad was in the hospice for a week and mum for 10 days.
“They both passed away in the hospice, but had received such a good level of care when they were here. We stayed overnight towards the end, and made use of the family facilities. Coming from a hospital environment and into the hospice was just such a peaceful experience for everyone.”
The trio also held a Blooming Great Tea Party as part of the charity’s June campaign for the first time, and are hoping to replicate in summer 2017.
“We’re glad to be able to help out people who are in the same situation as we’ve been in,” added Rachel.
“So far, we have raised over £10,000 for Marie Curie. We’re hoping to be able to do a family fun day or something similar in the future, but we will be continuing to fundraise.”
