Team Football League climbs Kilimanjaro for Marie Curie

Press release published

With less than 24 hours until take off, the final preparations are being made for The Football League's Mount Kilimanjaro trek for Marie Curie .

The trek has been organised to celebrate the end of The Football League's Official Charity Partnership with Marie Curie for the 2010/11 season. Legendary football pundit and ambassador for Marie Curie, Chris Kamara, will lead the team of 29 people climbing Africa's highest peak for the challenge.

Team Kammy includes football fans representing 17 clubs from across the UK, newly promoted Swansea City boss Brendan Rodgers, former Coventry City Manager Aidy Boothroyd , Middlesbrough Chairman Steve Gibson, Daily Mail columnist Des Kelly and the BBC's Mark Clemmit.

Brendan Rodgers, who has already successfully clinched promotion for Swansea City to the Premier League, spoke about his drive to continue reaching new heights:"My objective for this year was to complete two challenges. The first, to get Swansea promoted to the Premier League and the second - arguably the more difficult of the two - to get to the top of Kilimanjaro.

"I'm honoured and proud to be given the opportunity to raise money for such a wonderful charity whose nurses do such amazing work in communities across the country. I sincerely hope that I can complete the climb to the summit which would make a fantastic end to the season for me personally."

The Football League will be keeping everyone up to date on stories from the camp by tweeting all 19,000 feet of the challenge live via @football_league using the hashtag #FLKiliClimb.

Kamara said: "This is going to be a huge challenge personally for me but it will be made easier by the unbelievable support shown by some of my friends from within the game and the fans that are joining me along the way.

Marie Curie Nurses   cared for my mother at home before she died so it is a cause very close to my heart.  I know that this climb will not only raise much needed funds but also awareness of the crucial work the nurses carry out in homes across the 72 Football League communities each day.”
