New lockdown restrictions guidance causing distress to the bereaved
Press release published
Leading end of life charity Marie Curie says the UK Government’s latest guidance on the six-person rule is causing further distress and confusion for bereaved families.
The charity has seen a sharp spike in enquiries to their Information and Support Line over whether wakes can be held in people’s own homes.
Matt Williams, Marie Curie Head of Information and Support, said: “Ahead of the new six-person rule being introduced in England, Wales and Scotland on Monday, we have been inundated with calls about whether people are able to hold wakes in their own homes.
“The people we speak to are experiencing additional and unnecessary distress at what is already a very difficult time. We pride ourselves on being able to give accurate and up-to-date information but the latest guidance on GOV.UK is very unclear.
“The Government simply must give more consideration to dying people, their relatives and loved ones when announcing new Covid-19 guidance.”
Wakes are not mentioned specifically anywhere on GOV.UK giving bereaved families two choices, not to have wakes and miss a really important part of grieving, or to have a wake and risk potentially breaking the law.
Marie Curie Information and Support Services include a free phoneline, webchat and online and printed information. In June, the charity created a hub dedicated to clarifying Government rules and advice during coronavirus.
Matt Williams said: “Confusion and anxiety around Government guidance has been an ongoing issue throughout the coronavirus crisis. A large proportion of enquiries to our Support Line, from both the general public and health and social care professionals, have been linked to a lack of clarity on information about shielding, visiting and funerals.”
The Marie Curie Information and Support line (0800 090 2309) can help with information about all aspects of end of life or grieving, whether you have practical, emotional or financial questions or concerns, or if you just want someone to talk to. Nurses are also available to talk to on the line. For more information, visit www.mariecurie.org.uk/support
