Walk Ten for Marie Curie  this summer

Press release published

Marie Curie Cancer Care is calling on people across the UK to 'Walk Ten' this summer. The charity is holding a series of unique summer evening walks, supported by HomeServe, Britain’s dedicated home emergency and repairs experts.

Walk Ten is taking place at 20 spectacular venues around the country, such as the estates of stately homes, many of which are usually closed to the public in the evenings. At the end of each 10k walk, there will be fun activities throughout the evening, such as fireworks, live music, and picnics, in celebration of the work of Marie Curie Nurses. Marie Curie Nurses provide free care to people with terminal cancer and other illnesses in their own homes and in the charity’s hospices.

HomeServe employee Jayne Neal, PA to HomeServe’s CEO and Chairman, who took part in the Shugborough Walk Ten last year said:

"Walk Ten is a brilliant occasion, giving people the chance to walk 10k in stunning surroundings, but also to recognise the dedication of Marie Curie Nurses, who work through the day and night providing care to people with cancer and other terminal illnesses.

"There’s a real festival atmosphere at the end of every walk where friends and families come together. Then at 10pm, which is the time Marie Curie Nurses start their night shifts across the country, candles are lit and everyone is silent for a few moments to think about the nurses and the people they are caring for.

"The fun then continues late into the summer evening."

The walks all take place between July and September. Registration is £10 per person (children go free) but everyone is encouraged to raise as much as possible to support Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Notes to editor

Marie Curie Cancer Care is one of the UK’s largest charities. Employing more than 2,700 nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals, it provided care to more than 31,000 terminally ill patients in the community and in its nine hospices last year and is the largest provider of hospice beds outside the NHS.

Funding

Around 70 per cent of the charity’s income comes from the generous support of thousands of individuals, membership organisations and businesses, with the balance of our funds coming from the NHS.

Marie Curie Nurses

The charity is best known for its network of Marie Curie Nurses working in the community to provide end of life care, totally free for patients in their own homes.

Research

The charity provides core funding for two centres for palliative care research, the Marie Curie Palliative Care Research Unit at University College London and the Marie Curie Palliative Care Institute Liverpool. It also supports palliative and end of life care research through its project grant funding streams, the Marie Curie Cancer Care Research Programme (administered by Cancer Research UK) and the Dimbleby Marie Curie Cancer Care Research Fund.

Supporting the choice to die at home

Research shows around 65 per cent of people would like to die at home if they had a terminal illness, with a sizeable minority opting for hospice care. However, more than 50 per cent of cancer deaths still occur in hospital, the place people say they would least like to be. Since 2004 Marie Curie Cancer Care has been campaigning for more patients to be able to make the choice to be cared for and die at home.
