Celebrating the contribution of our amazing volunteers

Thousands of people volunteer with Marie Curie on a regular basis to help us care for people living with a terminal illness. To celebrate Volunteers’ Week we spoke to staff at Marie Curie and asked them to share some stories with us about the fantastic things that our volunteers do.

Ward Volunteers at the Marie Curie Hospice, Cardiff and the Vale

Volunteers on the wards in our hospices have one of the most varied roles in the charity. By carrying out tasks such as serving drinks, chatting to patients and taking on the photocopying and filing, Ward Volunteers offer their vital support to Patient Service Clerks in a busy environment.

Kath Cawley, from the Admin team in the Marie Curie Hospice, Cardiff and the Vale is very grateful to Lynne, Gill and Hazel for all their help. “I cannot say thank you enough for all that the volunteers on the ward do for me. They have helped me so much to settle into my new role and nothing is too big nor too small a task. A million thank yous would still not be enough.”

Jess Francies, Community Fundraiser, is enthusiastic in her support for this group form East London that have had a brilliant first 10 months of raising funds and awareness in their local area.

“I would like to say a big thank you to the Wanstead Fundraising Group for all of the wonderful work that they have done since they formed in July 2013. They’ve already raised over £8,000 for the charity and are an absolute joy to work with.”

Deidre Evans, Belmont Road Shop

Over 3,000 volunteers keep our charity shops running by sorting donated goods, organising the shop floor and serving customers.

Linda Cobain, Shop Manager at the Marie Curie Shop on Belmont Road in Belfast,  celebrates the commitment of one of her long-standing volunteers.  “Deidre volunteers in the shop on Belmont Road once a week and has shown great commitment to the shop and to the charity for the past 10 years. She travels on two buses to get here and only ever misses a shift when she goes on holiday. Without the support of dedicated volunteers like Deidre, our shop would not be the success that it is.”
